The resource center is a web-based toolkit intended to be used by critical care practitioners (e.g. dietitians, physicians, nurses, pharmacists) engaged in providing nutrition therapy to critically ill patients for quality improvement (QI) purposes.  The resource centre can be used to support the implementation of critical care nutrition guidelines or for self-development (i.e. to learn more about different aspect of nutrition therapy).

The Toolkit is a dynamic resource, and is being updated and revised on a regular basis.  Visit the Resource Center often to see what's new!

Development of the Resource Center

The Resource Center has been compiled by the Critical Care Nutrition research team, in collaboration with members of the Canadian Critical Care Nutrition Clinical Practice Guideline Committee.   The content of this toolkit was informed by a literature review of effective guideline implementation strategies and consultation with critical care practitioners. While the majority of the resources have been specifically developed for this Resource Center, several are example of tools currently being used at hospitals. We are grateful to these hospitals for granting us permission to share their tools. We have attempted to keep the tools evidence based and consistent with the Canadian guidelines wherever possible. Other recommendations are "opinion based" only and are derived from current practices in some hospitals.

Finding the Right Tool for You

In order to help our users search for and find specific resources, the QI Toolkit has been organized by nutrition topic (e.g. EN: feeding protocols) and by the resource type (e.g. bedside tool).  You may also navigate to our Presentations and Publications pages from the Resource Center.  Each resource is free to download.  We encourage you to carefully review the content of the resource with your ICU colleagues and adapt the content to your local setting.

Implement Optimal Nutrition Practices

Providing optimal nutrition therapy to critically ill patients in the high technological environment of the ICU can be challenging. Click here for guidance on how to use the tools in our resource centre to improve practices in your ICU.

We Want to Hear From You

The Resource Center is for you – the critical care practitioner – therefore we highly encourage your suggestions and feedback.  There are several ways of doing this.
  1. For each resource you can share your comments on the content and your experience using the resource by providing a review and star rating.  This is similar to providing a review and rating for a hotel.  After submitting your review, there will be a short delay prior to it appearing on the website, as all reviews are screened by our team.  Please be patient, this step is to prevent spam appearing on our website, we will endeavor to post all reviews within 1 business day.
  2. We encourage you to submit your own resources by sending an e-mail to Margot Viola at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Submitted resources will be reviewed to ensure that they are consistent with the Canadian guidelines. We will inform you before adding your resource to the QI Toolkit.
  3. You can also provide feedback or suggestions by contacting us directly.
